Jump to Recipe

Apples have a long history with humans. In this post I share an easy apple sauce recipe, that will bring amazing results in your life and personal growth.

An Apple A Day

Apples have been contributing to human health for millenia. Emma Farrell is a Celtic herbalist and plant spirit healer. She shared that Apple was a remedy associated with the triple goddess Brigid (girl, woman and crone). Apple is associated with the woman/mother stage of life. Here are just a few of the ways apple helps us in this stage

    • good for the liver
    • brings the energy of abundance
    • helps us find the deliciousness of life
    • helps us find the space to nurture ourselves
    • get rid of lots of toxic debris
    • allows for self-governance
    • works with inner-child issues

Farrel said that many of us did not receive the care we needed as children. Apple with its spirit of nurturance holds us in a motherly embrace while we call back “inner child soul fragments.”

While it helps us embrace the child in us, it also helps us reclaim our power, “we are taught to outsource everything,” including our energy. Apple helps us claim our own energy.

    How to use apple

Farrell goes on to recommend working with apple extensively for 30 days and recording the results in a journal. But how do we use apple?

There are multiple ways to use apple. Here are just a few–

    • literally eat an apple a day
    • work with flower essences (crab apple is a common one for this)
    • make and enjoy apple sauce–that is what this post is about

    Easy Apple Sauce

Growing up my grandmother had 2 apple trees in her backyard. Each year she would make delicious apple sauce that she generously shared with the family.

I remember assisting her in the process and when my grandmother decided to down size I was gifted a lot of her canning equipment.

While I really appreciate this physical gift, the gift of memory is even better.

Now I have modified my applesauce recipe and method to more easily fit into my busy life. It is this method I share with you.

    Step 1:

Core and roughly chop 12-15 apples. Do not peal them. This gives the finished sauce a beautiful deep, rich color.

Pro tip: I just cut my apples off the core by standing them up on the cutting board. The first cut is next to core but doesn’t cut into it. Then I lay the apple down on the cut side and make a similar cut to the 2nd side. I keep turning and cutting the apple until I have 4 uneven pieces and a square shaped core.

Then slice the pieces into thinnish chunks.

    Raw Apples in Crockpot

    Step 2:

    Put in a large crockpot.

    Add 1/4 cup of water.

    Cook on low overnight.

    Step 3:

In the morning use a slotted spoon and scoop out the apples.

Blend in a high power blender until smooth.

    Step 4:

Place in sterilized pint jars. Top with 2 part lid. Process for 20 minutes in a steam or water bath canner.

    The numbers

I started with a 1/2 bushel bag of Harrelson 2nds from a local orchard. One large crockpot gave me between 3 and 4 pints of finished apple sauce. I ended up doing this method 4 times to make it all the way through the bag with 12 pints of applesauce. While I spread the work out over 4 days to make it through my large bag of apples the amount of time spent each day was minimal. Now I have 12 pints of applesauce.
